Easter eggs and hot cross buns will taste all the more scrumptious the day they are paid for with banknotes depicting robin redbreasts.

We may think of these delightful garden favourites with their rusty bibs as Christmas symbols but their association with the Passion of Christ dates back centuries.

So goes Christian folklore that the robin was stained with the blood of Jesus after alighting on the Cross and being wounded trying to remove the crown of thorns.
