The Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) hosted Pennsylvania’s Emerging Drug Trend Symposium, where treatment providers and other professionals in the substance use disorder (SUD) field gathered to learn how to improve prevention, intervention, treatment, recovery, and harm reduction services for Pennsylvanians.

Over 400 SUD professionals attended the symposium, which showcased Pennsylvania's multidisciplinary approach to addressing these issues. Since the beginning of Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration, DDAP has brought together hundreds of stakeholders—including SUD treatment providers, healthcare professionals, emergency personnel, law enforcement, criminal justice professionals, and individuals with lived experience—for this event.

“We are all in this together—fellow agencies in the Shapiro Administration, treatment providers, and everyone who offers direct support and care. This symposium is a clear reflection of that collaboration,” said DDAP Secretary Dr. Latika Davis-Jones. “As drug use patterns evolve, treatment providers and other SUD professionals must acquire the knowledge necessary to tailor their services to meet the needs of the individuals seeking help.”

This year’s event featured over 30 sessions that covered various critical topics, including:

- The implications of a continually changing drug supply for Pennsylvania

- Strategies to reduce youth vaping and SUD risks on college campuses

- Prenatal care for pregnant women with SUD

- Best practices for treating opioid use disorder in justice-impacted populations

- The effects of severe weather and environmental hazards on individuals with SUD

- The connection between brain injuries and SUD

White House College Sports “Reforms” would simply codify inequity

\"They're not serious about the exploitation of college athletes, protecting their health, safety and ability to share in the enormous profits that's being created because of their sweat and labor...There's no industry or activity in America where this much wealth is created and the people that actually create the wealth are not seeing the kind of benefits or protections they deserve.\" -- U.S. Senator Cory Booker College sports can open opportunities for student-athletes.
