No South African should ever be told to “go back”
Post
|July 08, 2026
IN DIFFICULT times, societies often look for someone to blame.
South Africa is no exception. As unemployment rises, public services deteriorate, corruption persists, and crime continues to erode public confidence, anger is understandable. But anger becomes dangerous when it is redirected at fellow citizens instead of the failures that created these problems.
The recent calls for South Africans of Indian descent to "go back to India" are not simply offensive - they are fundamentally incompatible with the values on which democratic South Africa was built. The Constitution settles this question beyond any reasonable doubt. Its preamble proclaims that "South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity".
Section 3 recognises South African citizenship, while Section 9 guarantees equality before the law and prohibits unfair discrimination. These are not abstract ideals. They are the legal and moral foundation of our Republic. If you are a South African citizen, this is your country. Your ancestry does not diminish your citizenship, nor does anyone have the authority to revoke your place in the nation because of your race or heritage.
South Africans of Indian descent have lived here for more than 160 years. They did not arrive yesterday, nor are they temporary guests. Generations have been born here, educated here, worked here, and buried their loved ones here.
