Safety fears as board will no longer operate

Perth Harbour Board's chairman Chris Ahern is worried about the safety implications of the board being discontinued.

On Wednesday, May 28, Perth and Kinross Council's (PKC) Economy and Infrastructure Committee agreed to discontinue the board deeming it no longer necessary if the harbour is no longer a port.

The committee-except Bailie Chris Ahern-approved a motion for PKC to remain statutory harbour authority for leisure use at Perth Harbour but to stop operating it as a commercial port.

But Perth Harbour Board chairman Bailie Chris Ahern raised concern about the safety aspect of not having a board to impose controls on activity within the stretch of River Tay Perth and Kinross Council is responsible for.

The Perth City Centre ward councillor said: "We've tried to change and add by-laws before especially with reference to jet skis. And we decided we wouldn't do that because the process is so lengthy. It can take several years."
