Devine hails popular extension plan forWorld Cup

- JACK THOMSON, LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER

A veteran politician has welcomed additional licensing hours for this summer’s World Cup - but urged people in Renfrewshire to enjoy themselves responsibly.

Paisley Southeast councillor Eddie Devine is hoping for a “positive atmosphere” as Scotland's men compete at the tournament for the first time since 1998.

It comes after the licensing board agreed venues can stay open until 30 minutes after the final whistle of any match during the competition.

Councillor Devine said: “It is a welcome decision but I hope people don't take it as a licence to cause problems.

“They should take it for what it is and that’s to hopefully celebrate Scotland getting further than we ever have done at the World Cup.

“You want it to be a really positive atmosphere and one where people enjoy themselves but, ultimately, in a responsible way, so that all of the focus is on supporting the team.”
