A majority of policyholders are unaware of how the cap on hospital room rents can significantly impact their health insurance claim settlements.

Should I port my health policy which has a cap on room rent?

It is important to note that most health insurance policies come with a daily room rent limit. For instance, in your case, it is ₹5,000 per day.

However, if you choose a room that costs ₹10,000 per day, you are exceeding your eligibility by 100%.

But here is the catch—the insurer will not just deduct the extra ₹5,000 per day hospital room rent. Instead, they will apply what is known as a proportionate deduction to the entire hospital bill, except for items that are not linked to the room category.

When you opt for a room category higher than your eligible limit, the insurance company calculates the ratio of eligible rent to the actual rent.
