'Puzzling' land-swap deal has city mayor's support

PLANS for a controversial £400,000 land swap have been backed by city mayor Sir Peter Soulsby.
ADVICE: Sir Peter Soulsby
The proposal involves swapping a Leicester City Council-owned plot in Midland Street with the site opposite, on the corner of Queen Street and Southampton Street, with the aim of building offices and homes.
The land in Queen Street is the former home of Big John's Auto Centre and is valued at £1.125 million, £180,000 more than the council plot.
The council proposes to pay developer Rakal Ltd this sum, as well as an additional £220,000 for transaction fees and stamp duty.
