Council leader in talks over elected mayor referendum

Lancashire could find out today whether the government will agree to the county holding referendums on the creation of an elected mayor and a radical revamp of its councils.
Stephen Atkinson, the new Reform UK leader of Lancashire County Council, has called for “legally binding” public votes on both of the contentious issues.
He was due to meet local government minister Jim McMahon today to discuss the demand, which he has already formally set out in a letter to Whitehall.
Speaking about the mayoralty, Coun Atkinson told a meeting of Lancashire's Combined County Authority (CCA) that the position “should become clear” after the talks.
