Tourist Influx to Offbeat Kashmir Destinations Sparks Waste Woes
Kashmir Observer
|JULY 3, 2025 ISSUE
As heatwaves sweep the northern plains, Kashmir's offbeat hill destinations have witnessed a sharp surge in tourist footfall.
But the growing influx has brought with it an alarming environmental crisis — unchecked littering and waste dumping that now threatens the fragile ecosystems of these scenic regions.
Remote yet stunning destinations like Bangus, Gurez, Tulail, Drang, Tangdhar, Gagangeer, and parts of Uri have become popular summer escapes. However, with no formal waste management systems in place, meadows, riverbanks, and forests are now dotted with plastic bottles, food wrappers, and non-biodegradable waste left behind by visitors.
In Gurez, residents say the once-pristine banks of the Kishanganga River are increasingly defiled by heaps of litter.
