Draper's Windmill gets listed status upgrade
Isle of Thanet Gazette
|December 19, 2025
ONE of Kent's rare working smock mills, Draper's Windmill in Margate, has been granted a prestigious upgrade in its protected status, from Grade II to the higher Grade II* listing, by Government heritage agency Historic England.
Inside the windmill
(HISTORIC ENGLAND ARCHIVE)
The black weatherboarded smock mill, originally built around 1850, was one of only 19 of the most remarkable buildings and places to receive new or updated listed status this year, in recognition of its exceptional historic and architectural importance.
The mill’s elevated status reflects its rarity as a working structure. It was restored to full running order in 2019, and uniquely, its three pairs of millstones can be operated either by wind power or by a 1920 Crossley gas-powered engine.
