Parasnath Hill, a Jain Religious Place, Is Also Considered Sacred by the Tribal Populace
RANCHI: A section of tribals in Jharkhand is up in arms after a Gujarat-based religious trust filed a PIL for protection of the sanctity of Parasnath Hill, which is a major Jain religious spot.
A tribal leader close to the matter said his community members took this PIL as an attempt to deprive tribal people of their right to worship according to their belief system.
"The meeting of Santhal society was held at Government Guest House on Sunday night under the leadership of Fagu Besra. Representatives of religious, social and public organisations of Santhal society and intellectuals from Giridih, Hazaribagh, Santal Pargana, Odisha, West Bengal and Kolhan participated in it. A total of eight resolutions were passed in the meeting, in which the seventh resolution states that Santhal society will organise a protest march on March 12 against encroachment in Marang Buru (Parasnath mountain). They took the PIL as an attempt to deprive tribes from their right to worship according to their belief system," the tribal leader said.
