‘For ease of living, lK provisions to be axed’

Over 1,000 provisions of 79 Acts will now be removed for the ease of living after the Jan Vishwas Bill is enacted, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday, citing examples of archaic laws such as a municipal corporation sweeper facing a jail term for resigning without notice, or a driving licence becoming invalid the day after its expiry.
“The objective behind the legislation is to reduce regulatory burden and foster trust-based governance,” the minister said on Saturday after both Houses of Parliament passed the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill. Over five crore cases related to minor offences are currently pending across India, many of which involve small infractions, he said.
‘An example of the ease from imprisonment relates to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957.
