1 dead during clash at Assam eviction site

One person was killed and two others critically injured on Thursday morning after police opened fire during a clash at an eviction site in Assam’s Goalpara district, police officers privy to the matter said.
The incident occurred during a plantation programme —a post-eviction initiative by the district administration — in the Paikan Reserve Forest area, where police and forest officials came under attack from a large group of locals, police added.
The state government carried out a large-scale eviction drive between July 8 and 12 in the Goalpara and Dhubri districts, during which over 2,000 alleged illegal houses on forest and government land were demolished.
