Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc across various parts of Maharashtra over the last four days, claiming the lives of 24 people, with financial capital Mumbai particularly hit the hardest on Tuesday, when several suburban trains were cancelled and two Monorail trains with over 500 passengers aboard got stuck between stations, requiring a three-and-a-half hour long rescue operation.

24 dead in 4 days of Maha rainfall; Monorails halted

At least five people died in rain-related incidents across the western state on Tuesday, officials said, adding Mumbai accounted for one casualty. According to the state government, 24 people died over the last four days: seven in Nanded, three in Mumbai, two each in Beed and Hingoli, and one each in ten districts of Konkan and Vidarbha.

In Mumbai, more than 300 passengers aboard a Monorail train were rescued in a multi-agency operation after it got stuck between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park stations, leaving its coaches dangerously tilted. The incident, which took place around 6pm, was caused by overcrowding and power supply failure, officials aware of the details said.
