At least six people died and 70 others sustained injuries after a stampede broke out at a temple during an annual festival in Shirgaon village of North Goa early on Saturday, with chief minister Pramod Sawant ordering a magisterial probe into the incident and offering ex gratia of ₹10 lakh each to families of the deceased.

PANAJI:

The incident took place around 3 a.m. near the Sree Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao when thousands of devotees thronged the road leading to the temple for "jatra" — an annual pilgrimage festival. Police said a scuffle broke out between devotees on the narrow stretch of road, which is at an incline, following which people fell over each other and were crushed.

"There was pushing and shoving among the dhonds (devotees). One of the dhonds' staff touched a loose wire and a bulb broke, causing sparks. In the ensuing commotion, innocent people lost their lives," temple committee chief Dinanath Gaonkar said.

A senior police officer said preliminary probe has revealed that a scuffle broke out between two groups of devotees. It appears that one person fell on that slope and due to the movement of the crowd it was a chain reaction of others falling over each other which then led to a stampede.
