A large part of the popular Mikeva Hyper in Mossel Bay was destroyed when a fire broke out shortly after 10:00 on Tuesday morning, 27 May. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but the police have confirmed that an arson docket has been opened at Da Gamaskop Police Station and that investigations are under way.

One woman sustained burn injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment, but all 154 staff members were safely evacuated.

According to Mossel Bay's Chief Fire Officer, Joseph Johnston, the fire was contained just before midday thanks to a co-ordinated effort from multiple emergency services, including Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management and PetroSA's firefighting team. The crews remained on the scene throughout the afternoon to extinguish flare-ups and hotspots.
