A few funny lines and a hopeful glance – that's Just Good Friends
Edinburgh Evening News
|February 20, 2026
Once you've seen one person ski fast down a mountain, you have seen them all which is why the Winter Olympics have all the appeal of slipping on ice and breaking a leg.
Unless you like rugby, football or horse-racing, there is not much in the way of relief elsewhere in the schedules.
Tune in to That's TV - because as one John Sullivan comedy - Citizen Smith - finishes its run, another - Just Good Friends - has come along.
First broadcast in 1983, it stars Paul Nicholas and Jan Francis as former lovers Vincent Pinner and Penny Warrender, who meet in a pub five years after he jilted her at the altar.
Penny is from a comfortable, middle-class suburban home and is a secretary for an advertising firm. Vincent is an ex-ice cream salesman turned bookmaker who is the son of a self-made wealthy scrap metal merchant.
It comes with the customary warning that the language and attitudes were of their time - more than 40 years ago.
The premise, though, stands the test of time. Be honest, of those of us who have been jilted, though not necessarily at the altar, years on have not wondered how the person who did the jilting has fared?
