DERBYSHIRE police have released their "strangest appeal ever" after a suspected crocodile was spotted in a canal.

The rural crime team issued a statement early on Thursday, saying the reptile was spotted between bridge 22 and bridge 22a on the Trent and Mersey Canal, near Mercia Marina, Willington.

It was reported to the Canal and River Trust after being seen some time between Wednesday and Thursday, but when its officers arrived, it was nowhere to be seen.
