FIELD OF GOLD may well be the main star on show at Glorious Goodwood in the Sussex Stakes on Wednesday, but for me the handicaps are the magnet for betting purposes and ANCIENT ROME (Tuesday, 1.40) rates the best bet of the meeting in the Coral Chesterfield Cup.

The son of War Front (right) landed this very contest two years ago when coming from way off the pace under a typical Jamie Spencer ride, with people looking at me with vacant expressions as I shouted “aye aye Jamie” at the top of my voice having backed him on the Tote at 34-1.

However, recent runs have not been so encouraging, bar a late running 10th in the Royal maestro in the Goodwood Cup on day one.

He never got into contention in the Ascot Gold Cup and this shorter trip should suit, but there are still questions over a staying distance, so complete outsider
