The 22-year-old has been flagged up by Tony Bloom's Jamestown Analytics and McInnes wants to beef up his options in that position with summer recruit Christian Borchgrevink having been hampered by injury since his arrival.
Both Oisin McEntee and Michael Steinwender have also filled in at right-back this term.
But McInnes, who will welcome Islam Chesnokov when the January window opens after snapping up the Kazakhstan winger on a pre-contract, was reluctant to go into detail about the pursuit of Altena.
McInnes said: "There's nothing I can say about that.
"Only the fact that we're keen to make a couple of signings in this window and obviously Islam is one.
