15 women lose rights after work certificate blunder

Carers face deportation thanks to red tape bungle

A GROUP of 15 vital workers at a Scottish care home are facing deportation because of a red tape crisis.

The permission to stay appears to have been cancelled because no application for a new sponsor licence was made within a 20-day deadline after staff were transferred to a new employer under UK TUPE procedures.

Certificates of Sponsorship for the qualified carers, who have worked in Scotland for years, were cancelled because of changes in the ownership of the company that employs them.

The women were told by the Home Office they will not be able to keep working at Burlington Court Care Home in Glasgow, which witnessed 16 suspected Covid deaths in 2020, without valid, updated certificates.

Union bosses are demanding an urgent rethink.
