Bus axe is too cruel for school

CHILDREN are being forced to walk along a “dangerous” country road after a council scrapped their bus to school.

South Lanarkshire Council took the decision to withdraw all school transport from Sandford village to the local high school, Strathaven Academy, two miles away.

But the move has been branded “unsafe, unfair and shortsighted” by angry parents.

The council's executive committee last year approved a change to the two-mile qualifying distance for mainstream secondary school transport from this month.

Those attending their catchment mainstream secondary will now only be entitled to transport if they live more than three miles from school.

The move comes amid nationwide anger as school bus services are axed, with councils blaming a lack of cash.

On Tuesday, the Daily Record told how Jessica McMillan, from Galston, Ayrshire, who lives with profound disabilities, has been refused a place on her school bus.
