The police and crime commissioners 'were always going to fail

November 17, 2025

READERS have been responding after the UK government announced proposals to abolish police and crime commissioners (PCCs) in England and Wales by 2028.

- By DAVID PRINCE

The plans would see mayors and council leaders assume policing duties instead.

Officials claim the reforms will generate savings of at least £100m whilst delivering additional officers for neighbourhood policing.

Home secretary Shabana Mahmood branded PCCs a "failed experiment".

The Association of Police and Crime Commissioners said it was "deeply disappointed" and cautioned about a potential "accountability vacuum".

Andy Dunbobbin presently serves as North Wales PCC for the area.

The elected positions were initially established in 2012, with duties encompassing budget-setting for police forces and appointing the chief constable within their respective jurisdictions.

However, ministers intend to scrap the position in 2028, when forthcoming elections are scheduled to occur, aiming to save a minimum of £100m with which to support neighbourhood policing.
