Steel heritage theme as Urdd Eisteddfod's coveted Chair and Crown are unveiled

The annual eisteddfod, which is Europe's largest youth festival and celebrates the Welsh language, culture and the wealth of young talent in Wales, will take place later this month at Margam Country Park, near Port Talbot.

Some of the final pieces of steel from the nearby Tata steelworks were used in the designs of the two prizes to pay tribute to local industrial heritage.

Angharad Pearce Jones, from Brynaman, created the Chair, while Nicola Palterman, who is from Neath, created the Crown.

Award-winning artist Angharad, who is originally from Bala, said: "Creating this year's Chair has been a wonderful privilege and a dream come true. It's something that's been on my wish list for many years."

She drew inspiration from the steelworks and industry, and a combination of the Welsh steel and flat steel produced in Port Talbot was used to create it. Angharad was given a guided tour of the Tata Steel site and saw parts not visible from the main road, such as countless pipes, and these parts can be seen on the finished Chair.
