Minor earthquake is recorded in Eryri valley

HILLSIDE WAS THE EPICENTRE OF THE 0.9 MAGNITUDE TREMOR

A MINOR earthquake occurred in an Eryri valley this week, the British Geological Survey (BGS) has confirmed. Epicentre of the 0.9-magnitude tremor was a hillside east of Nantlle, Gwynedd.

It was registered at 8.33pm on Wednesday night, January 28, at a depth of 8km. The BGS was not notified of any local impacts.

The epicentre was on the slopes of Mynydd Mawr above the B4418. The road is among the most dramatic routes in North Wales, embraced by towering mountains. It runs past Llyn Nantlle Uchaf before winding down to Rhyd-ddu towards the western flank of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon).

The same night, people in Denbighshire also reported a tremor - Llangollen residents said they'd been woken by a rumble that rattled wardrobes. But this was reported around 1am and the BGS has no record it a seismic event here.
