Charlie Appleby’s runner is equally rated with the Karl Burke-trained Clear Force, who has been highly tried and has some smart bits of form in the book.

Preference is for the more unexposed Godolphin runner, who cost 1.4million guineas at the breeze-up sales in the spring but did take three attempts to get his head in front.

He was very green when fifth at Yarmouth in May before having to settle for second at Nottingham the following month.

Silent Applause then got off the mark back at Nottingham at the start of July, dropping back to five furlongs and coasting to a one-length victory before undergoing a gelding operation in the interim.
