Tributes to EastEnders actor Tony after death at age of 88

- BY ZOE DELANEY

ROY Evans famously did not like Pat Butcher's dangly earrings in EastEnders but there was no doubt he loved her as a person.

And thanks to actor Tony Caunter's portrayal of the gentle car dealer, the nation took him into their hearts.

Tony died on Monday aged 88, just eight days after losing wife Frances.

Roy was brought in to the BBC soap as a romantic interest for Pat, played by Pam St Clement, in 1994 before the pair tied the knot.

The character remained in Walford until 2003, when the writers killed him off with a heart attack.

Tony was born in Southampton in September 1937 and went to Worthing High School in East Sussex and Westcliff High School in Essex.
