Farewell to the People's Pope

Daily Mirror UK

|

April 23, 2025

As a Catholic, I felt truly bereft. People of all faiths and none will have received the news with bewilderment. Pope Francis worked right till the end, giving people hope he would come through all his health problems.

He had the simple touch and could relate to all people with his unstuffy demeanour and his compassion reaching out to everyone but especially the poor and marginalised. Who will now stand up for the poor, sick and disabled, the disenfranchised, the refugees in our world and speak out with not just compassion, but with justifiable anger, as to their treatment? That question needs an answer, because compassion and empathy was his hallmark and his legacy too.

Judith Daniels Great Yarmouth

Pope Francis has been one of the strongest, most memorable Popes. He spoke out with conviction and was not scared to call out world leaders and offer moral guidance on issues such as climate change, cruelty in Gaza, compassion to immigrants and the importance of aid to poor nations. He also apologised for the abuse of children by priests which had been swept under the carpet. While many in the world mourn his passing, let's hope his successor continues to be a strong advocate of moral justice for Christians everywhere.
