Trump lifts his threat of tariffs after 'productive' talks with Nato over 'deal' for Greenland

DONALD Trump has dropped his threat to slap tariffs on countries including the UK that opposed his grab for Greenland.

The deescalation of tensions followed what he called a “very productive meeting” with Nato chief Mark Rutte.
The US president announced on his Truth Social platform last night: “We have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region.”
He added: “This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the USA, and all Nato nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1.”
He later said the deal “gives us everything we needed to get”, and that it “will be forever”. It includes “security and minerals and anything else”, he added.
Markets rose sharply on the back of the tariff announcement.
It came after Mr Trump dismissed speculation about his plan to take Greenland by force. He told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, ahead of his meeting with Mr Rutte: “We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be fairly unstoppable.
