Concerns have been expressed about a growing number of people being moved into “dispersal accommodation”. Politicians say greedy landlords are cramming more migrants into unapproved HMOs.

It comes as Labour has been accused of being “scared” of upsetting the European Union over potential border checks.

The government and police chiefs are under growing pressure to carry out more spot checks to detect illegal migrants, with accusations that Dublin is “very happy to just remove them from their territory”.
