A MODEST D-Day veteran who described his ship being blown up as “we sat on a mine” turns 100 today.

George Spencer was set to celebrate with his family and offered some sound life advice ahead of the landmark.

The ex-lieutenant commander, of Ballymena, Co Antrim, urged people to enjoy their lives and pick friends wisely.

George said: “There are some nasty people around” but noted there are “very good ones” too, adding: “I’m very fortunate with my daughters...they look after me well. Apart from that, I say enjoy all sorts of things.”
