Village rakes in a fortune from fans of hit TV show
THE village where Downton Abbey is filmed has made a “small fortune” from tourists in the 15 years since the show began - but the community is divided over the influx.
The streets of Bampton in Oxfordshire have become a magnet for fans from around the world eager to visit the setting for the fictional village of Downton.
Bus-loads of sightseers come armed with cameras and selfie sticks in all weathers, with guided tours setting them back as much as £500.
They take in sites including St Mary's Church, the setting of weddings, christenings and funerals in the show, which is due to end in the upcoming film The Grand Finale.
Some residents are delighted at the income generated by the tourism boom, which has helped improve local buildings and services.
