Blackpool's piers under threat from fall in sand levels

THE future of Blackpool's three iconic piers is at risk as a "significant" decline in sand levels are threatening their Victorian footings.
The erosion around the constructions has accelerated in the past 15 years, owner the Blackpool Pier Company has warned.
The sand level at the popular Lancashire seaside resort has plunged up to 10ft since the piers were built more than 130 years ago.
Victorian engineers put piles into the bedrock as foundations for the South Pier (opened in 1893), Central Pier (1868) and North Pier (1863).
Surveys
But Blackpool Council has been told surveys show 9ft 10in of sand loss at the base of South Pier, 5ft at Central Pier and 3ft 4in at North Pier.
