NT members 'upset' as family take over running historic manor house
Coventry Telegraph
|June 28, 2025
NATIONAL Trust members have been disappointed by the decision to no longer be able to visit one of the trust's properties as part of their membership from next year. The charity announced that the Throckmorton family will take back the management of Coughton Court in Warwickshire from February 2026.
The Throckmortons have lived in the Tudor manor house for nearly 600 years and handed over the property's ownership to the trust in 1946. However, a term in the lease enables the family to take over the site's running, an option it has exercised.
As a result, members of the trust will have to pay for entry. The new terms mean that the Throckmortons will not pay any rent, but will have to pay the maintenance bill.
This includes the historic collectible items on display and hiring conservation experts to maintain them, National Trust bosses say. The charity has apologised for the spark of anger it has caused among trust members and volunteers.
