Apology to abuse victim - almost two years after she died

Known only as 'Marie,' the report explains how she was placed with a foster family as a child and endured years of being abused by a man appointed to care for her.

Marie bravely came forward when she was a teenager and still living with her abuser. He was later found guilty of abusing multiple children and jailed.

Marie was awarded a large sum of money after suing Warwickshire County Council, but the damage was already done, and Marie's life spiralled out of control due to her mental health. She died just after her 19th birthday.

Described as 'real firecracker' and 'bubbly and clever girl who loved to help others, Marie’s life is a tragic one which saw her endure neglect and abuse almost from the start.

Once removed from the home where she was abused, she found some stability with a new family who loved and cared for her. But the suffering she'd dealt with for most of her years was simply too much.

Warwickshire Safeguarding Children Partnership, which includes Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board, Warwickshire County Council and Warwickshire Police, published the Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews in relation to Marie earlier this month. A statement released alongside it apologised to Marie almost two years after she'd died. This has been deemed “far too little, and far, far too late” by the foster carer who took Marie in after her she blew the whistle on her abuser.
