Enduring spirit of Two Oceans Marathon

THIS week, the roads of Cape Town will once again carry a familiar weight as thousands of runners gather for the Two Oceans Marathon.

To focus only on distance, scenery, or competition is to miss its true meaning.

The Two Oceans Marathon is not just a race. It is a ritual of memory, identity, and something close to prayer: the willingness to keep moving when stopping would be easier.

I ran my first Two Oceans sometime around 2002. Young, full of energy, and the certainty that convinces you the body will always answer when called upon. Back then, the race felt simple. Performance. Time. Proving something I could not yet name. You trained. You showed up. You ran.

Then life intervened.

The years moved. Responsibilities expanded. The structure that once made training possible began to compete with the structure required simply to live. Gradually, almost without noticing, the race shifted from something I participated into something I remembered.

But memory here is not passive.

Each year, when this moment arrives, something returns. Not just nostalgia but recognition. A reminder of a former self shaped by routine, by early mornings, by a willingness to endure discomfort without immediate reward.

To run Two Oceans is to enter a particular kind of conversation with yourself.
