Iloilo university secures patent for kadios-based antibiotic innovation
Business Mirror
|February 26, 2026
By securing valuable support from the Department of Science and Technology—Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD), Iloilo’s University of San Agustin (USA) officially obtained a patent late last year from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) for its method of purifying antibiotic compounds from Cajanus cajan or pigeon pea, locally known as kadios.
Valid until August 31, 2042, the patent grants USA and its partner manufacturer, Maridan Industries Inc., the exclusive right to prohibit any unauthorized person or entity from making, using, selling, or importing any product derived directly or indirectly from its patented process of purifying antibiotic compounds from kadios seeds.
The development is the result of years of extensive research by the USA-Center for Chemical Biology and Biotechnology (C2B2) on kadios seeds, led by Dr. Doralyn Dalisay and supported by DOST-PCHRD’s Tuklas Lunas® Program.
