A poor night but so much for Bowyer still to sort
Burton Mail
|July 10, 2025
TUESDAY night's 5-0 defeat to Chesterfield in Burton Albion's first preseason friendly perhaps more than anything highlighted that there is still much to sort out before the real business starts than manager Gary Bowyer would have preferred.
In an ideal world, Bowyer, like any boss, would have wanted his squad largely sorted by the time they were training in earnest - he said as much - but the reality is that he is still working with a number of players who are unlikely to feature through the season.
We can only assume work is going on apace in the background to free up space in the squad for a number of incomings Bowyer will still want.
The other thing to remember is that the transfer window cuts into the season by a fair bit. Albion will have paid seven matches by the time it closes and, as we have seen before, an electric start to the season by a player can result in a move before the end of August remember Ipswich Town picking up Gassan Ahadme after he scored a few early in a season.
Last year, former brewer Davis Keillor-Dunn had played against Burton for both Mansfield Town and Barnsley before September was out.
