The accolade is the most prestigious awarded by the real ale enthusiast group.

Independence - a 4.6% premium pale from Bristol Beer Factory - was awarded the honour at Cambridge Beer Festival.

The Champion Beer of Britain award was first given by Camra in 1978 and in its almost 50-year history some of Britain's most cherished real ales have been recognised.

Sam Burrows, managing director of Bristol Beer Factory, said: ‘‘The lineage of the Champion Beer of Britain is impeccable.

‘‘It features some of the best beers of all time: Landlord, Bluebird, Cwtch, JHB, Rudgate Ruby Mild, and now Independence. We could not be more chuffed.
