“Many Japanese companies are no longer confident about making new investments in Cambodia,” said Mr Apichit, adding they may consider expanding their businesses in Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia instead.
The addition of varying US tariff levels for nations in the region makes investment expansion decisions more complicated, he said.
A 19% tariff is applied to US imports from Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia, while a 20% levy is slapped on Vietnamese products.
Foreign exchange rates and environmental laws in each country must also be factored in as they can add financial burdens or reduce operating costs, said Mr Apichit.
