Try as he might, Mark Rutte doesn't look like he'll become besties with Donald Trump.

Stuck in a Rutte of Appeasement

The NATO secretary-general, a so-called “Trump whisperer,” has run the full playbook. He's flattered the president as a “man of strength.” He's praised his “decisive” strike on Iran. He's tried to chat about golf. He even called him “daddy” on camera at The Hague summit last June, joking that Trump had to scold Israel and Iran like squabbling schoolkids.

For a while, it worked. After Davos in January, Finnish President Alexander Stubb was asked who could calm Trump's Greenland tantrum. He laughed and answered with one name: Mark Rutte.
