'Disaster of the Century'
Mesut Hancer holds the hand of Irmak, his 15-year-old daughter, who died in the earthquake, the day after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the country's southeast on February 7. The deadliest seismic event in the world in more than a decade, the disaster in Turkey and Syria has killed more than 33,000 people, injured tens of thousands and flattened thousands of buildings. Frigid weather has further dimmed the chances of finding people alive and, according to the World Health Organization, may bring "a secondary disaster" for survivors who have been left homeless.
