RACHEL TAN'S CINEMATIC HOMECOMING
Prestige Malaysia
|September 2025
In the month Malaysia celebrates its heritage, it feels fitting to spotlight a film that marries Hollywood storytelling with homegrown roots.
Worth The Wait, a romantic comedy with an all-Asian cast, premiered in Kuala Lumpur this July before its nationwide release in August. Produced by former Miss Malaysia and Miss Chinese International Rachel Tan, the film is as much about love and connection as it is about cultural pride.
For Tan, the project is deeply personal. Loosely inspired by her own long-distance relationship between Malaysia and the United States, Worth The Wait unfolds as a tender ensemble story directed by acclaimed Taiwanese filmmaker Tom Shu-Yu Lin, in his English-language debut. Filmed partly in Malaysia, the movie captures not only the lush visuals of locations like Batu Caves and the Botanic Gardens, but also the warmth of its people and the rhythm of everyday life.
“To bring Hollywood stars here, to have them experience our culture, food, and the friendliness of our people—it's something I've always dreamed of,” Tan says. “I wanted the world to see my country the way I do.”
PAGEANT QUEEN TO PRODUCER
Tan's path to producing was far from linear. After her reign as Miss Malaysia, she worked as an entertainment lawyer before moving to Los Angeles. There, she co-founded King Street Pictures with her husband, producing six films before Worth The Wait. She admits that the “glamour” of her career has shifted over the years.
“As a talent, glamour was about the entourage—the hair, the makeup, the red carpets,” she says with a laugh. “Now, as a producer, glamour is seeing a project through from an idea to the screen. It's the satisfaction of telling stories you believe in, and watching them resonate.”
