FROM THE HIGH-ALTITUDE

Inspired by the joy of journeys, we trace how watchmakers transformed the cold calculation of global time zones into the ultimate horological poetry of travel.
There is a distinct, satisfying alchemy to cross-border flights.
You step into a pressurised cabin in one hemisphere, hurtle through the stratosphere, and emerge hours later into a world where the sun operates on an entirely different schedule. For decades, the luxury traveller's ultimate ally against this temporal dislocation has been a singular, highly romantic watchmaking complication: the GMT.
Yet, while those three letters are ubiquitously stamped across watch dials today, the mechanism behind them is often misunderstood. Far from a mere aesthetic trend, the GMT watch is a masterclass in spatial problem-solving—a technical marvel born of necessity, refined by the jet age, and split today into distinct mechanical philosophies.
To understand the beauty of the dual-time wrist, one must look to the skies, understand its inner gears, and appreciate how watchmaking transformed the cold calculation of time zones into absolute poetry.
WHAT IS A GMT, AND WHO INVENTED IT?At its most fundamental level, a GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) watch is a timepiece capable of tracking two different time zones simultaneously. Standard watches operate on a 12-hour cycle, meaning the hour hand sweeps around the dial twice a day. A GMT watch adds a distinct fourth hand—often finished in a contrasting colour or tipped with a bold arrow. This hand operates on a 24-hour scale, making just one slow, deliberate revolution around the dial per day, usually pointing to a dedicated 24-hour bezel flanking the dial.
