Set in one of KL’s older neighbourhoods, Taman Seputeh, the sorbet pink and pastel greenstriped Trés Hotel is the venue for our February cover shoot. Taking inspiration from Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel is in step with the theme for the hotel’s design ethos. Stepping into the lobby and surveying the objects, designs and activities present I’m washed over with a wave of nostalgia for post-Modernist Malaysia. It gives a sense of rooting oneself in a love for the local while keeping an eye on the global, which we see reflected in the lives of the enfianced couple, Siti Saleha (whose sweet nickname Sally hints at her half English parentage) and Joshua Fitton (who also has one Malay and one English parent).

The exciting buzz of the retro maximalist shoot, packed with colour blocked outfits in Mod ’60s styles harmonised with neutral shades, matches the excited chatter the team and cover stars engage in over upcoming projects, style ideas and naturally Sally and Joshua’s February wedding, set to take place right after Valentine’s Day. Timepieces from Longines effortlessly bring a touch of elegance and timelessness to trendy outfits, such as an aquamarine pleated Alia Bastamam pantsuit or Edward Achour Paris knit skirt suit from The M Store that the shoot stylist describes to me as “a lavender ghost of the ’20s.”
