That much is evident from the very first pages of A Different Kind of Power, her candid and quietly powerful memoir that maps her journey from the small town of Morrinsville to the highest office in New Zealand—and then, just as strikingly, her decision to walk away from it all. In telling her story, Ardern doesn't attempt to mythologise her past or tidy up the complexities of public life.

Instead, she offers a reflection on what leadership meant to her: not as a performance of strength, but as an expression of care. It is, as the title emphasises, a different kind of power. One shaped by intention rather than ambition, that recognises legacy not as a matter of buildings named or statues raised, but in the quiet impact of lives touched.

Throughout the book, Ardern recounts her time as Prime Minister of New Zealand with the clarity of hindsight and the vulnerability of someone still in the process of healing. Her most defining moments—leading the nation through the Christchurch mosque attacks, the White Island eruption, and a global pandemic—are recounted not for applause, but as evidence of the human cost of leadership.
