The Easy, No-Nonsense Watch Style Guide
Man's World
|November 2025
Watches are strange little objects. They can be sentimental, technical, performative, or purely ornamental, depending on who's looking at them. Yet, for all the mystique people try to attach to them, wearing a watch well comes down to a few simple ideas: proportion, context, colour, and confidence. Once you understand these, the whole thing becomes almost absurdly straightforward. Think of this as the simplified guide—the one you wish someone gave you before the hobby spirals into an obsession
Every watch has a builtin personality
Every watch has a builtin personality and matching that personality to your outfit often makes the difference between looking styled and looking improvised.
Dress watches
Dress watches are the quiet achievers of the category, and a personal favourite of mine. They stay slim, stay minimal, and stay on leather, which naturally gives them a clean and elegant visual language. They pair easily with tailoring, eveningwear, or anything that feels structured and intentional, and while they rarely stray from classic dial colours such as white, black and silver, rules are meant to be broken, as we soon shall explore.
Dive and modern sport watches
Dive and modern sport watches, meanwhile, are the everyday heroes. Steel bracelets, sturdy cases, bold indices, and an instant sense of purpose make them surprisingly adaptable. They look as comfortable with a T-shirt as they do peek out from under a blazer and tend to take a beating better than most other watches.
Field watches
Field watches have a rugged charm that makes them ideal for daily wear. They're light, legible, usually compact, affordable, and sit nicely with casual fits or business casual without drawing unnecessary attention. If you want a single watch that can handle most environments without fuss, the field watch silhouette does a lot of heavy lifting.
Chronographs
Chronographs are the stylish multitaskers. Their pushers and sub-dials make them look inherently sporty, which puts them right in the sweet spot for everyday outfits, weekend wear and “smart casual”. Wear one with tailoring only if you want the outfit to feel energetic rather than formal.
