In a move aimed at supporting India's aviation sector, the Central Government has introduced a Special Additional Excise Duty on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), bringing the effective tax rate down to 29.5 per litre.

The revised duty structure came into effect on March 26, 2026, marking a significant fiscal adjustment in fuel taxation for the industry.
The new framework rationalises ATF taxation through a combination of revised duty structures and applicable exemptions. As ATF remains one of the largest operational cost components for airlines, the move is expected to bring greater predictability in fuel pricing and potentially ease financial pressures on carriers.
