DR RACHEL HO, Medical Director of La Clinic, has a special interest in minimally invasive anti-ageing treatments. Here, she breaks down why this laser works so well for various skin concerns. (For more of Dr Ho's skincare and beauty insights, check out her educational blog!) Plus, our editor-in-chief Rebecca puts the pico laser to the test — read on to see what she thinks.
What exactly is pico laser and how does it work?
Pico laser is an advanced, non-invasive laser technology that delivers ultra-short pulses in picoseconds. This laser effectively treats a range of dermatological conditions by using a photomechanical effect that reduces pigmentation and stimulates collagen production with minimal collateral heating or damage to the surrounding tissues.
What skin issues can it tackle?
Pico laser is particularly effective for tattoo removal, treating pigmentary conditions like melasma and photoaging and skin rejuvenation by improving skin tone and texture.
What are some advantages of pico laser compared to other lasers on the market?
One of the key advantages is that it treats the conditions mentioned above with minimal injury to surrounding tissues. It's associated with fewer side effects, even in darker skin types and typically requires fewer treatments for conditions like melasma and tattoo removal. Pico laser is also considered safer for patients with darker skin, as it presents fewer risks compared to older lasers.
