THE MODERN MANGALSUTRA

Brides Today

|

July - September 2025

An enduring symbol of a marriage, this traditional ornament has evolved into an everyday style statement, no longer confined to a black-beaded chain. Jewellers explain how the mangalsutra finds expression in varied contemporary forms today — from bracelets and rings, to earrings — while keeping the sentiment intact.

THE MODERN MANGALSUTRA

The mangalsutra is far more than just jewellery. Debates around patriarchy aside, it remains a traditional symbol of union that holds emotional value to the wearer. Today, however, this sentiment finds new forms of expressions in contemporary designs that exceed the boundaries of just a chain around the neck.

“The classic mangalsutra will always remain significant for weddings and festive occasions, but contemporary brides and fashion-conscious women are increasingly drawn to lighter, minimal, and versatile formats,” explains Ramesh Kalyanaraman, Executive Director of Candere by Kalyan Jewellers.

Mangalsutras that double as bracelets, reversible pendants, and layered ones that can be worn as single strands or combined are in demand, as well.

“Mangalsutra necklets — mini necklaces with beads — are also popular for festive and religious occasions,” says Meghna Jhaveri, Director — Design & Merchandise at CaratLane. "This versatility offers more value and wearable options than a single piece, making it a contemporary essential."
